Killer Joe is a 2011 Southern Gothic dark comedy film written by Tracy Letts, directed by William Friedkin, and starring Matthew McConaughey in the title role. Letts adapted the screenplay from his play of the same name; Friedkin and Letts had similarly collaborated on the 2006 film Bug.

Finding himself in considerable debt, Chris Smith, a Texan drug dealer, decides the only solution is to murder his mother to collect the insurance money. Getting together with his father, Ansel, the ex-husband of Chris' mother, they decide to hire Joe Cooper, a contract killer who also happens to be a police detective. The plan is that the money will go to Chris' sister Dottie who Chris thinks is the beneficiary of the mother's life insurance policy. Chris is unable to front Killer Joe's fee. However, Chris agrees that Joe can take Dottie as a retainer until the insurance comes through.

Acting upon the retainer Killer Joe carries out the contract on Chris' mother. After the mother's death, it is discovered that Rex, the mother's boyfriend, is the beneficiary of the insurance policy. It comes to light that Rex provided false information to Chris about the policy. Also, Chris' step-mother, Sharla, who is also involved with Rex, pushed Chris into hiring Killer Joe. Killer Joe discovers this, confronts Rex, presumably kills him, and recovered the insurance check. Chris knowing that he will be killed by Killer Joe makes rapid plans to escape to Peru with Dottie.

In the final scene, Killer Joe arrives at the Chris' trailer and brutally beats the truth out of Sharla, that she and Rex conspired to put the mother's murder on Chris and leave Chris to the mercy of Killer Joe. Killer Joe, after sexually humiliating Sharla by forcing her to perform fellatio on a piece of fried chicken while Killer Joe gets ecstatic and Ansel watches, makes it clear that he intends to take possession of Dottie as the family is unable to pay. Chris arrives at the trailer and tells Joe that he is taking Dottie. Chris brings a gun to the trailer and gets into a fight with Killer Joe, dropping his gun. During the fight, in which Killer Joe brutally smashes Chris' face in with a can of pumpkin soup while his own parents subdue him, Dottie recovers the gun and in a fit of panic, shoots Chris, killing him and mortally wounding their father. Dottie points the gun at Killer Joe and tells him that she is having a baby. Killer Joe feigns enthusiasm as he inches closes to Dottie. The film ends as Dottie moves her finger back on to the trigger.
