Plot details of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

Recently widowed housewife Evelyn (Judi Dench) must sell her home to cover huge debts left by her late husband. Graham (Tom Wilkinson), a high court judge who had spent his first eighteen years in India, abruptly decides to retire and return there. Jean (Penelope Wilton) and Doug (Bill Nighy) seek a retirement they can afford, having lost most of their savings through investing in their daughter's Internet start-up. Muriel (Maggie Smith), a retired housekeeper not too keen on Asians, needs a hip replacement operation which can be done more quickly and inexpensively in India. Madge (Celia Imrie) hunts another husband, and Norman (Ronald Pickup) an aging lothario, is trying to re-live his youth.
To varying degrees they are each overwhelmed by the unfamiliar environment. Despite the boundless enthusiasm of its young manager Sonny (Dev Patel), the hotel is dilapidated and the meals too spicy for English palates. Jean purposely stays in the hotel reading, whereas husband Doug delightedly explores city sights suggested by Graham, who disappears on secret outings and finds much has changed since his youth.

Muriel, despite her racism, comes to grudgingly appreciate her doctor for his skill and the hotel cleaner (a member of the "Untouchable" caste who speaks no English) for her kindness. Evelyn starts her first job, advising the staff of a call centre how to better interact with British customers. Sonny struggles to convince an investor to provide funds for improving the hotel and continues to see the girlfriend despite his mother's disapproval. Madge joins the Viceroy Club seeking a spouse and is surprised to find Norman there for the same reason. She introduces him to Carol (Diana Hardcastle) and once he admits he is simply lonely and seeking a companion, the two begin an affair.

Muriel's doctor, takes her to the home of the hotel cleaner, who has invited her to meet the family in gratitude for her kindness in simply acknowledging her when no one else has. Muriel later tells her she used to be in service as well; managing a family household and raising their children, until, aging, she was dismissed.
Graham confides in Evelyn that he is trying to find the boyfriend he was forced to abandon after being found together. Social-climbing Jean is attracted to Graham, and makes a rare excursion to follow him, but is humiliated when he explains he is gay. Graham ultimately reunites with his former lover, who embraces him joyfully and explains he has lived a generally happy life in an arranged marriage of mutual trust and respect. After confiding to Norman that he is finally at peace with himself, Graham dies of a heart condition and is cremated in a traditional ceremony arranged by his ex-boyfriend. Evelyn and Doug grow increasingly close, and following Graham's cremation, she tearfully laments the lack of trust experienced in her own marriage. Jean confronts him for comforting Evelyn and their argument reveals how truly unhappy they are.
